American Idol results (Week 1)

The only real surprises were Becky (I thought some shallow men out there might keep her around based on her looks and the Maxim spread with her twin) and Patrick. Unfortunately, we're still stuck with Kevin, whose voice is atrocious, and Brenna, whose voice and attitude are atrocious.

I'm not usually a conspiracy theorist, but I do wonder if the producers didn't manipulate things to get rid of Becky because of the Maxim photos. It's not exactly the image they want the American Idol to portray....

Don Knotts, RIP

There aren't many "famous" people from West Virginia. Don Knotts was one of the most famous, however, and it's all for good stuff. He is, of course, best remembered for playing Barney Fife, the bumbling deputy with a heart of gold, on The Andy Griffith Show. He also played the role of landlord on Three's Company, a show that certainly didn't live up to the wholesome ideal of AG. Later on, he had a role of neighbor to Andy Griffith's Ben Matlock on Matlock.

He'll be missed. :(

American Idol Top 12 Men

Here are my rankings for last night's performances by the top 12 men.

1.  (tie) Chris (9)

1.  (tie) Elliott (9)

1.  (tie) Ace (9)

4.  (tie) Patrick (8)

4.  (tie) David (8)

4.  (tie) Gedeon (8)

4.  (tie) Taylor (8)

8.  (tie) Bucky (7)

8.  (tie) Will (7)

10. Sway (6)

11. (tie) Kevin (5)

11. (tie) Bobby (5)

My top four (even though there's a four-way tie for fourth) are Chris, Elliott, Ace, and Taylor. Taylor just wasn't as good last night as I was expecting him to be. I'd say all four of these, though, were quite infectious and good. I enjoyed all four performances, and for the first time, I felt the Ace love. Woo!

Patrick was pretty good. The song wasn't the best choice for him, but his voice was good and pure. David was a lot of fun to watch, and I felt a bit like a teenager watching him. He's an amazingly adorable kid, that's for sure! I enjoy the crooner voice he has.

Gedeon gave a fun performance as well. This was really the first time I'd heard him sing, and it was pretty good. I like his smile, and he seems to have a good time while he's performing.

Bucky was better than I'd expected from him. I liked the Lynrd Skynrd song, and he didn't skeeve me out too bad. He's certainly not attractive, but he sings better than I thought he might. Will surprised me, because I expected him to be better. The song was a fun choice, but it didn't have the spark I wanted.

Sway totally put me off him by singing the whole dang time in falsetto. I know he has a nice voice, and I know falsetto is difficult, but really?

Kevin shouldn't be there. Not at all. Aww, how cute and all that, but no. In fact, when the little recap at the end went through all the performers, it was like Kevin & Bobby were singing in some other competition. I didn't like either one of these performances, and I hope these guys go home tonight.

American Idol Top 12 Women

Here are my rankings based on the performances on February 21, with the score (out of 10) that I gave:

1.  Katharine (10)
2.  (tie) Mandisa (9)
2.  (tie) Paris (9)
4.  (tie) Becky (7)
4.  (tie) Lisa (7)
6.  (tie) Kinnik (6)
6.  (tie) Ayla (6)
6.  (tie) Stevie (6)
6.  (tie) Heather (6)
6.  (tie) Melissa (6)
11. (tie) Kellie (5)
11. (tie) Brenna (5)

Thoughts:

Katharine blew me away. She has amazing control over her voice, and she's just so darned cute! She needs to work on moving around the stage, but this *is* a singing competition, so at this point it doesn't matter as much.

Mandisa has an incredible voice, and she has terrific presence. I just enjoy her to pieces.

Paris is great! I love to hear her sing, and I so enjoy watching her. She, too, has a commanding presence.

I thought Becky and Lisa were both fine, but neither one really did anything for me. Becky's at #4 mainly because of her performance, not so much her voice. Lisa's at #4 because of her voice, but she leaves me cold. There's just nothing there for me to relate to.

Kinnik is fine, but she looks like a man and sings like a Cabaret singer. It's kind of like watching a transvestite, to be honest. Her voice is fine, but I don't like her performance style. Ayla is robotic, and I'm annoyed by her duck lips. This may be a generalization, but it seems like everything in her life has just been handed to her, and I don't think this should be next. She's just not good enough.

I like Stevie, but last night's performance wasn't good. She's at #6 based more on her potential than on her performance this time. I know she has more power than that, and I was quite disappointed that she didn't use it. I liked Heather's voice, but she had a lot of pitch issues. Her tone is so interesting to me that I'd like to hear more! I also like Melissa's tone; I think the two of them (Melissa & Heather) are quite similar, and I wonder if that will count against them.

Kellie, as far as I could tell, didn't hit one note in tune. The judges' "feedback" was all about her personality rather than her performance, but man! I cringed through the whole song. Please don't sing Martina McBride if you can't handle her. Brenna's voice was awful, too. Her low notes were incredibly rough, and I didn't like the tones her voice took. It wasn't good, dawg, really.

Dirge vs. dance

A friend of ours is pregnant. This will be their third. They got married almost seven months after us.

I found out last night when my husband told me. I had to take an HPT this morning to make sure it was ok to go off Prometrium.

The convergence is just awful. I feel like there are all these people out their doing their "we're fertile" dance while we're stuck listening to the infertility dirge.

Hopelessness is not cool.
